sweating, this can have a major impact on your metabolism which can affect how much fat your body stores!<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you want an answer to your question “does sweating help you lose weight?”, keep reading!<\/p>\n\n\n\n As we discussed, sweating is a process where your body is working very hard to regulate your body temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the air is very hot or humid outside, this can affect how much water the sweat glands in your skin produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the air is cool and dry, this can cause the sweat glands to slow down their production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lots of sweat results in lots of water being lost from the body through sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This process works just like our kidneys do – they remove water from our bodies at night and replace it during the day when it’s needed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The amount of water that you lose through sweating will depend on how much work you’re doing out in the sun or what kind of physical activity you’re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, the amount of calories you’ll burn during this process is minimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your body will only expend about 10-20 calories worth of energy for every pound (or kilogram) you lose through sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The good news is that a lot more happens to your body when you exercise than just sweat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The main aim of sweating is simply to prevent overheating and dehydration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This means sweating helps to keep your body operating at a healthy temperature and avoid dehydration (if the air outside is very dry).<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if you’re trying to lose weight, it’s best not to try and get in into a serious sweat so as not to lose too many calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now that we know what sweating is, and why it occurs, let’s look at the science behind whether or not you can skip the sweat session and still lose weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Research has shown that it can definitely help in a number of different ways, but there are some caveats as you’d imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First of all, the amount of water your body loses through sweating will depend on how hot and humid it is outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Very hot conditions can result in around three pints (92 ounces) of sweat being lost every day while at extreme temperatures people can lose up to 7.5 pints (239 ounces) of sweat per day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, the amount that you lose through sweating will be minimal in comparison to what you’d burn if you were to exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you were to have a leisurely stroll on a cool day, you’d expect to lose around 2-4 oz (60-120 grams) of sweat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In return, exercising will burn around 10-20 calories of energy (which is about the amount of energy you’d expend running a mile uphill), so if you’re simply walking around outside your body would go through a lot more work than sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So does sweating help you lose weight when compared to exercise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n As mentioned, the answer is no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lots more happens in your body when you exercise than sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You’ll burn 10-20 calories worth of energy for every pound lost through sweat, but people who are exercising burn more than that on each pound lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s a difficult balance to achieve, and if you’re trying to lose weight more than 1-2 pounds per week then you might be wasting your time sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is some evidence to suggest that for people who are looking to lose weight and sweat is a side effect, then there is a significant increase in the rate at which they can lose weight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n But again, when you take into account how much energy you’d burn when exercising, it’s not worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’re trying to burn 250 calories per hour while exercising, then even if women do 2 x 30-minute sessions of sweating with 2 minutes rest in between each one, they’ll only be burning around 70 calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You could burn a lot more calories by walking more miles each week, doing medium to hard intensity exercise, or even performing vigorous exercise (with some guidance advice)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The bottom line is that if you want to lose weight and sweat is a side effect, you’re going to be able to do so much better by looking at different means of working out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We tend to think of sweating as a negative thing, but it’s actually a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sweating is the body’s way of cooling down when we become too hot (or too cold).<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does this by taking in more oxygen, which increases the amount of oxygen in all parts of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In turn, this increases your metabolism – which if you’re trying to lose weight (or keep it off) is what you want to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Metabolism is a term used to describe how fast the body burns calories and turns food into energy.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you want to lose weight, you need to increase your metabolism so that you burn more calories<\/a> than you eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’re sitting around trying to work out and lose weight, your metabolism might be keeping pace with your efforts, but when you add sweat into the mix, it quickly becomes much harder for the body to store fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Much research has been conducted on the scientific aspects of sweating and weight loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So far, it appears that your body is not able to burn that many calories through sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, if you’re using sweat as a way to raise your metabolism and speed up your metabolism – then it’s a different story altogether!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Basically, sweat only contains water, so when you sweat, you can’t lose weight like you could if you were burning calories with exercise<\/a> (such as jogging or temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It might seem like a contradiction to what I just said – but sweating can burn calories. The key, of course, is that you have to be working out while you’re sweating!<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’re sitting around in a sauna or hot bath and not doing any physical activity, the calories burned will be negligible (unless you work out after that – which would increase how much you lose!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Conversely, if you were to add exercise into the mix of your sweat session – then the amount of calories that can be burned is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you really sweat off fat? Well yes and no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You CAN exercise while you sweat to burn calories, but if you’re using a sauna or hot bath to exercise in, the level of activity would be low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’re using cardio equipment<\/a> such as stair climbers or cross trainers, this may also not be enough exercise to burn enough calories for weight loss purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This type of activity will get your heart rate up, but not working out at a high-intensity level will not burn that many calories as the body uses very little energy when doing cardio workouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So yes – sweating can help you work out and lose weight\u2026 but it will not help you lose fat if you do so sitting down and doing nothing but sweating!<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you truly want to lose weight<\/a> and be lean, then the best way to do that is through exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can also use sweat to help you get fitter, but for those who want to burn fat and shed pounds then it’s not as effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, if you’re using sweat as a means of getting rid of water weight – then this could be just what your body needs to shed some pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Remember – sweating is not a magic weight-loss trigger.
