What Are Zero-Calorie Foods?

zero calorie foods

First, let’s see what is this theory called zero calories.

Is there such a thing a zero calories?

Well, the name says zero but actually the zero calorie concept doesn’t refer to the food itself.

Instead it’s based on the concept that these foods won’t add up calories no matter how much you eat them for this reason:

Health experts believe that these zero calorie or negative calorie foods take more calories from the body to be digested or burned down than what they actually contain.

For instance, let’s say a slice of apple has 1g of calorie, your body will burn 10 calories to break down and digest it. Got it?

This is the concept of zero calorie.

Calorie is a measurement in the nutrition world and also the body’s fuel. It’s actually the energy your body uses for different daily functions.

During a diet, calories are counted on a daily basis so that we can keep track of what is entering our body.

Calorie tracking is also the easiest way to predict if either weight loss or weight gain will happen.

You must know that the main reason why zero calorie foods are highly recommended when dieting is because:

  • They contain lots of water.
  • They are rich in fiber.
  • Most of them provide that satiety feeling.
  • They support & boost weight loss.
  • They will never promote weight gain even if you binge on them.

With that said, each time you feel like needing a snack or even if you want to use them as a meal replacement, go for these zero calorie foods.

Importance of Zero-Calorie Food For Weight Loss

As I said a few lines before, the water and fiber content in most of these foods are high.

For this reason, they are perfect to incorporate in your diet as they will provide you with a feeling of fullness.

And that feeling is what will prevent you from looking for food or snacks and as a result, you allow your body to burn more fat.

I’ll go farther on to say that consuming zero calorie foods will never sabotage your attempts at losing weight.

Now let’s see why including zero calorie foods in your weight loss journey will help you lose weight.

Water Content

Did you know that about 20% of our daily water intake comes from the food we actually eat?

You will notice in almost every article I write about weight loss tips, I tend to emphasize on water consumption.

This is because water is really one of the best weight loss aids ever.

One thing I’ve learned is that thirst and hunger will give your stomach nearly the same signals.

And one of the healthy habits I’ve tried to develop over time is to resort to water first as soon as I feel like craving for something.

Sometimes you can just be thirsty but since your stomach will ring the same bells, you might think you’re hungry and will defo look for something to eat.

But if your first action is to take a glass of water, you can realize that you were just thirsty.

Because water has the ability to fill up the stomach, I find it super helpful to control my appetite with this simple hack.

Well, I know that plain water is not that easy for everybody, especially in winter 😉

That’s why adding up zero calorie foods to your diet plan can be beneficial.

Since they are rich in water, they will do exactly the same thing as if you would have had a glass of water, i.e, help you lose weight.

Zero Calorie Foods Are Rich In Fiber

According to Harvard University, fiber will not only lower your blood pressure or improve your body’s response to insulin but fiber can actually help you lose weight.

You will notice that some of the foods I’m about to talk below are actually rich in soluble fiber.

I’m talking about soluble fiber because fiber is categorized into two types. There’s soluble and insoluble fiber.

And the type that promotes weight loss is actually soluble fiber.

Soluble fiber is important to preserve a healthy gut and many studies have even shown that people that eat more soluble fiber have a lower risk of developing belly fat.

When your gut is in a good and healthy shape, fat loss happens.

Consuming high-fiber foods will fill you up and will, therefore, help you drop those extra pounds.

Can I Eat Zero Calories Foods While Fasting?

Fasting, be it water fasting or intermittent fasting, is one effective method to lose weight fast.

You can read how I was able to drop 22 pounds in just seven days with water fasting here.

Can you eat zero calorie foods while fasting?? The answer is YES!!

I, once, did a water fasting where I ate a few of those zero calorie foods intermittently.

And I know, for a fact, that even if I didn’t take them, I would lose the same amount of pounds.

Simply because they are very low and some empty of calories. When your calorie intake is zero, your body will obviously draw its energy from your fat storage directly.

I mean, it will have to deal with neither new carbs, that are normally broken down into glucose nor new fats that are added to your fat storage.

Consequently, it speeds up the fat-burning process.

So, if you think you won’t be able to do a zero diet (water only), you can still load your plate with a few zero calorie foods.

Watermelon

zero calorie foods

The first one on my list is watermelon.

I don’t know about you but I find a few slices of watermelon is super refreshing!

Due to their high water content, watermelons are famous for their reviving powers, especially in summer.

Watermelons are very good at keeping the body hydrated and have many other health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, improve heart health and more…

Studies have shown that there are no serious effects if you have large amounts of watermelons.

Well, as you know, everything you take in excess will have an effect in the long term.

So, reasonable amounts are fine as long as they’re helping you in your weight loss journey.

Carrot

Carrots are naturally very low in calories. And yes they can help you achieve your desired weight.

In fact, one cup of raw carrot sticks represents only 3% of a normal daily calorie intake.

Pretty low uh?

A carrot has a little percentage of calorie but I’m including it this list since it can be counted as a zero calorie food because of its super low calorie content.

Even if it also true that carrots contain sugar, it can still be consumed without any fear.

Carrots can and will help you lose weight along with a good eating lifestyle.

Tomato

I’m not a fan of tomatoes but I try my best to eat them regularly because they are so rich in water and fiber.

As I said, these two nutrients are huge weight loss aids and including them in your diet can only be beneficial.

It was hard for me to believe when I read that tomatoes are actually great appetite suppressants.

One day, when I was on my weight loss program, I remember having a plate full of tomatoes and man, I was full like an egg.

It was literally as if I had gorged on a full plate of burger and fries! Ha!

Apple

Loaded with fiber, apples are known to be among the best weight loss supporters.

Apples are super low in calories and rich in water, fiber and are a good source of antioxidants.

Adding them to your healthy diet can only result in an accelerated weight loss.

Additionally, apples are famous for their abilities to reduce visceral fats, i.e, abdominal fats.

So, if you want to reduce your belly fat or get rid of your muffin top, add them in your diet and see for yourself.

Celery

zero calorie foods

Celery has become super famous in the nutrition world for a few years now.

Besides its health benefits, celery is now linked to weight loss.

This is due to its high level of water and fiber which are two essential and helpful elements for weight loss.

When eating celery or taking it in the form of juice, it helps prevent bloating, dehydration and weight gain because of its high level of water and dietary fiber.

Broccoli

Because of its richness in fiber, broccoli is considered to be among the best helpers in weight loss.

Broccolis are also very good and healthy carb sources that have a lot of benefits for general health.

Coloring your plate with these green weight loss aids is a must if you want to speed up your weight loss and eat healthily.

Since broccolis also contain protein, they will act as fill-ups and will keep you full for a longer period until your next meal.

Mushroom

Mushrooms are known for their richness in calcium, protein, fiber and other vitamins and minerals.

According to many health experts, mushrooms have the capacity to level up the vitamin D in the body.

This is really great in a weight-loss perspective because one of the most essential vitamins our body needs to burn fat is actually Vitamin D.

Therefore, mushrooms that contain a very low amount of calories should be featured in your diet for a sustainable weight loss.

Zucchini

One of the many jobs fiber does in our body is that it helps slow down digestion.

A slow digestion means that the stomach will feel full for a longer period of time.

That is why zucchinis, which are loaded with water and fiber, are connected to weight loss.

Eat a whole plate of fresh zucchinis and you won’t feel the need to snack trust me!

Lemon

zero calorie foods

You know by now how hydrating is important for a safe and rapid weight loss.

Lemon, infused in water, is a great way to keep your body hydrated and give a little kick to the metabolism.

Notice I just said lemon infused in water; it’s because I bet you won’t be able to just bite into a lemon each morning without grimacing…you will quickly give up! HA!

There’s a lot of controversy around the theory of lemon being a weight loss aid.

Some health experts suspect the pectin in lemon can be a filling agent and can provide a feeling of satiety.

On the other hand, a handful of health experts claim that lemons contain a very very little of that amount of fiber that can keep you full.

But anyway, lemons contain very low calories. So there’s no harm in adding them in your weight loss diet.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit contains a fat-burning enzyme that is actually a great aid for weight loss.

There are a few studies that have been able to prove the effectiveness of grapefruit on weight.

Since they are rich in water and fiber, eating a grapefruit can add bulk to your stomach, making you not crave for foods and, therefore, you obviously lose weight.

Cabbage

The cabbage soup diet is one fad diet and has proven to be very effective for weight loss.

It’s super low in calories and rich in fiber.

Cabbages feature among those almost zero calorie foods that have extremely amazing nutritional powers.

If you badly need to shed some extra pounds you can choose to go on a cabbage soup diet for a few days. Results guaranteed folks! I’ve done it…

Beet

Beets are loaded with healthy vitamins and minerals, fibers, both soluble and insoluble.

As I said earlier, soluble fiber helps combat fat by fixing your gut.

The fiber percentage in beetroots is enough to help you feel satiated and as a result, it curbs your appetite.

What will happen is that you will obviously shed some pounds!

Kale

Kale is well-known to be a diet-friendly food and is associated with weight loss.

It is rich water and fiber with very low calories and is known for its filling abilities to keep your stomach full.

So, if you’re actually ditching those bad snacks that can alter your weight loss, baked kale chips is a go-to snack you can prepare and consume without fear.

Coconut Water

When you take something that can increase your metabolic rate, you’re giving your body more chances to burn fat faster.

Coconut water is one “food” that can do this.

The acid found in coconut water has the power to give a kick to your metabolism and therefore bring many benefits such as easy digestion, weight loss, hydration and more.

Spinach

Packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and water, spinach makes a great weight-loss food you should consider adding to your diet.

Spinach is one leafy green that can also help fight belly fat.

Add it up to make a good and healthy smoothie and shed those extra pounds!

You can also consume them in salads or cooked.

Asparagus

Asparagus is a very famous weight-loss food that is rich in both water and fiber but low in calories.

Using it an add-on to your diet makes it a good choice if you’re looking for new healthy foods for your diet.

According to U.S News, asparagus contains a chemical that helps detoxify the body, therefore, reducing body fat.

Onion

Did you know that onion is a great source of soluble fiber? Well, now you know!

Soluble fiber is what keeps you gut healthy.

When you have a fixed gut, weight loss happens much faster.

Obviously, onion is therefore classified as a prebiotic food which you can’t afford to bypass now.

Eat them in whatever form you want and drop those extra pounds!

Radish

Want to stop your cravings? Radish is very filling and are very low in calories.

They are a good source of fiber and have the power to keep you satiated.

Take in a cup of raw radish as an afternoon snack and see for yourself how filling they are.

Bell Pepper

zero calorie foods

Well, this one I recently learned and was amazed because I really love them in my meals.

In my research, I found out that bell peppers contain capsaicin.

Capsaicin is a chemical found in some foods and it actually does something remarkable; it prevents new fat cells from maturing into full-fat cells.

Impressive uh?

This is why bell peppers are great weight loss promoters thanks to the presence of capsaicin.

But it’s however not recommended to binge on them in large amounts; this can produce nausea, abdominal pains, and even vomiting in certain persons.

Bottomline

If you’re serious about shedding your excess weight, adding those zero calorie foods can be of great help thanks to weight-loss powers.

So, let me know if you have seen some results after adding them up to your diet.
